This blog post is written to introduce one of Portsmouth's many talented local artisans based at the Hotwalls Studios in the historic part of the city known today as 'Old Portsmouth', which was one the walled fortified city of Portsmouth.

Cet article de blog présente l’un des nombreux artisans locaux de talent de Portsmouth installés dans les Hotwalls Studios, au cœur de la partie historique de la ville autrefois fortifiée. Cette partie de la ville est également connue aujourd’hui sous le nom du « Vieux Portsmouth ».
The Hotwalls Studio is in the city's ancient ramparts right up against the sea. Alice has one of those studios in the arches, where once guns stood poised to shoot at any enemy fleet daring to enter the harbour.
Les Hotwalls Studio se situent dans les anciens remparts de la ville, juste en face de la mer. Alice a installé son studio sous les arches, où se trouvaient autrefois des canons prêts à tirer sur toute flotte ennemie qui osait s’introduire dans le port.

Alice Hume of Vanderhume Studio in Old Portsmouth
Alice Hume, studio Vanderhume du Vieux Portsmouth
Born in Portsmouth, Alice Hume is a Textile Artist and Weaver based at Hotwalls Studios in Old Portsmouth (Since 2023 now in the City of Portsmouth Museum). She has been weaving for 15 years and graduated from Winchester School of Art with a degree in Woven Textile Design in 2013. Alice has also studied textiles internationally at weaving schools in Sweden and Japan.
Native de cette ville portuaire, Alice Hume est une artiste textile et une tisserande installée dans les Hotwalls Studios du Vieux Portsmouth (Depuis 2023 au musé de la ville de Portsmouth). Elle tisse depuis 11 ans et a été diplômée de la Winchester School of Art en 2013 d’une maîtrise en conception de textiles tissés. Alice a également étudié le textile à l’international, notamment dans des écoles de tissages en Suède et au Japon.
Alice teaches weaving and macramé workshops from her studio and all over the country at Festivals, Events and for clients such as Google, Facebook, Soho House, Wework, Chelsea Flower Show and Imperial College London. Her textile work has been displayed in Covent Garden Store Allbirds and she has led two Arts Council Funded Projects including Interactive Weaves..
Elle organise des ateliers de tissage et de macramé dans son studio, ainsi que dans tout le pays, à l’occasion de festivals ou d’évènements. Parmi ses clients, elle compte Google, Facebook, Soho House, Wework, Chelsea Flower Show et l’Imperial College London.Ses œuvres sont exposées au magasin Allbirds à Covent Garden. Elle a également dirigé deux projets financés par l’Arts Council dont « Interactive Weaves ».
Inspired by her travels and different cultures her work combines embroidery, wrapping, knotting and hand weaving on my Harris floor Loom. She experiments with unusual material
weavers of recycled copper, raffia and 1970’s vintage silk yarns to create wall decor, hanging copper moons, clutch bags and Textile earrings.
Puisant son inspiration dans ses voyages et les différentes cultures, son travail mêle broderie, emballage, nouage et tissage à la main sur le métier à tisser Harris floor Loom. Elle s’exerce avec des matières de tissage inhabituelles, comme du cuivre recyclé, du raphia et des fils de soie vintage des années 1970. L’artiste crée des décorations murales, des lunes en cuivre suspendues, des pochettes et des boucles d’oreilles en textiles.
Her studio Vanderhume is about collaboration, creating contemporary Textiles and is named after her ancestors who were Flemish.
L'essence même de son studio Vanderhume, dont le nom est un hommage à ses ancêtres flamands, réside dans la collaboration et la conception de textiles contemporains.
